Paul Simon(Short Overview)

-Having received countless awards across his career, including twelve Grammy awards, Paul Simon is easily one of the most decorated and respected musicians of all time. His innovation and talent led him to be inducted to both “The Songwriters Hall of Fame” and the “Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame.” After branching off from his group Simon and Garfunkel, Simon became a solo artist and quickly became one of the hottest artists of his time. Simon was not just a musician but a philanthropist as well. As a co-founder of The Children’s Health Fund (CHF), Simon demonstrated his ability to influence and help others apart from his music career. It was a result of Simon’s artistic and philanthropic ways that he was lead to South Africa and was inspired to make his most famous album Graceland. In 2007, Simon was awarded the first annual Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

  1. Hey Christian--these two posts (on Paul Simon and the Aparthied) are perfect follow-ups to our class discussion. Your first post was so interesting and it is great to now have some background on Paul Simon himself and the situation in South Africa.

I have been excited to read your blog because I have always loved Simon and Garfunkel. I have listened to so much of their music and I know a lot about them as a group, but I knew very little about them after they split up. I really had not thought of Paul Simon as a solo artist--so just that part of your topic made me want to read your posts. Adding the layer of South Africa to it made it ever better, as it goes beyond Simon as a musician but to Simon as a world-wide influence. So, while he was still winning Grammys, he was bringing attention to an important topic. It would even be great to see some of the lyrics to some of the more influential songs. Did Simon have any direct influence on the situation in South Africa other than through his music?

    thanks!

  2. Christian, I knew Paul Simon was good but i had no idea he was that good. Twelve grammys and an induction to the rock and role hall of fame is very impressive. Myself, being a huge Paul Simon fan and all, I find myself being very interested in your blogs.
